I am a complete beginner, is the course suitable for me?

Yes! The course has be written for those who have never played an instrument before. You will learn in a variety of ways; by string colour, distance between strings, reading notes, learning rhymes to help you remember patterns, copying the teacher and using videos to help you practise at home. There is also an optional practical theory class at the beginning of each lesson for those who have never learnt to read music.

I already play an instrument, is the course suitable for me?

Yes! If you can already read music then you will have a natural advantage but that doesn’t mean you will be bored…there is plenty of technique to learn. Among the previous Little Harp Social participants are current music teachers who would like to add harp playing to their classroom teaching skills, professional singers who would like a new instrument to accompany themselves with and therapists who would like to use the harp in their work.

I have a lap harp already, can I join without buying a LHS harp?

How far can I progress on a 20 string lap harp?

Where do classes take place?

Yes! If you already own a harp the cost of the level 1 beginners course is from £240 (cost may vary for some in person courses) . The course has been designed to fit on a 20 string lap harp so if you are in any doubt about your instrument, send us a photo.

The harps used in the Little Harp Social courses have a range of 20 strings and are tuned in the key of C. They do not have sharpening levers but if you progress to the level 3 course you will be taught to change key using the tuning key. At the end of the level 6 course, you will have reached an approximate ABRSM/Trinty grade 4 standard. You might decide you want to keep going with the harp and look to hire or purchase a larger instrument with levers or you might be happy continuing with your LHS harp. The technique taught on the course transfers to any other kind of harp.
